Graduate and analyst-level roles at consulting firms generally start between $65,000 and $85,000. Consultant and senior consultant levels typically range from $95,000 to $140,000. Managers and senior managers can earn between $140,000 and $200,000, while principals, directors and partners operate well above that threshold. In-house strategy roles tend to sit slightly below consulting firm equivalents at the junior end but can be competitive at the senior level, particularly in financial services, government and large listed corporations.

For many federal government consulting engagements, particularly those involving defence, intelligence, home affairs or sensitive policy work, a valid Australian Government security clearance is either required or highly advantageous. Baseline and Negative Vetting Level 1 clearances are the most commonly requested. Clearances can take several months to obtain and must be sponsored by an agency or an employer with the appropriate facility clearance. Candidates who already hold a current clearance are in strong demand and should highlight this prominently when applying.

This varies by career stage. At the junior to mid level, generalist analytical and communication skills are typically sufficient and sought after, as firms value candidates who can adapt across engagements. At the senior level, deep sector expertise, whether in government, financial services, health, energy or infrastructure, becomes increasingly important. Candidates who combine strong consulting methodology with genuine domain knowledge tend to be the most competitive for leadership and partner-track roles in the Australian market.
