What Is Labour Hire?

Labour hire is when an agency supplies workers to your business but remains their legal employer. Chandler Macleod recruits, screens, employs and pays the worker. You direct their day-to-day work on your site. You get flexible staffing for peaks, projects or ongoing demand, without taking on payroll, award interpretation or employment risk directly.

Why Businesses Use Chandler Macleod for Labour Hire

  • Licensed and compliant in every state we operate

We hold labour hire licences where state law requires them, and we meet Fair Work, award and superannuation obligations for every worker. You can check our licence status on each state register.

  • Workers on site in 24 to 72 hours

For most industrial, warehouse and trade roles, we can place pre-screened workers within 24 to 72 hours, depending on location. Specialist and remote roles may take longer.

  • Safety built into every placement

Our WHS systems are certified to ISO 45001, and we won the 2025 RCSA Excellence in Safety Culture Award. Before anyone starts, we complete site inductions, check tickets and licences, and carry out drug and alcohol testing. We also work with you on hazard management and can run ongoing testing to meet your site requirements.

  • National reach, local teams

We have branches in every major city, and in key regional centres including Mackay, Newcastle, Coffs Harbour and Shepparton. We supply metro sites, regional plants and FIFO operations.

Where your workforce needs hands-on support, we place Account Managers on site to manage performance, reporting and worker engagement. More than 70 of our Account Managers work directly from client sites across Australia.

Using a Licensed Labour Hire Provider

Several Australian states require labour hire providers to hold a licence. In those states, host businesses can face significant penalties for using an unlicensed provider.

State or territory Licensing scheme Regulator
Victoria Labour Hire Licensing Act 2018 Labour Hire Authority
Queensland Labour Hire Licensing Act 2017 Labour Hire Licensing Compliance Unit
South Australia Labour Hire Licensing Act 2017 Consumer and Business Services
ACT Labour Hire Licensing Act 2020 Labour Hire Licensing Commissioner

Chandler Macleod holds a licence in each of these jurisdictions. Before you engage any labour hire provider, check their licence on the relevant public register.

Same Job Same Pay: What It Means for Host Businesses

Under the Fair Work Act's "regulated labour hire arrangement order" provisions, introduced by the Closing Loopholes reforms, the Fair Work Commission can order that labour hire workers be paid at least what the host's enterprise agreement would pay them. Obligations have applied since 1 November 2024. Small businesses with fewer than 15 employees are generally exempt.

If your business has an enterprise agreement, or one is in negotiation, we'll work through whether an order applies or could apply. Where one does, we'll make sure our workers are paid correctly.

Labour Hire FAQs

  • What is a labour hire company?

A labour hire company supplies workers to other businesses. It employs those workers directly, and handles their pay, super and compliance. The host business directs the work on site.

  • Is Chandler Macleod a licensed labour hire provider?

Yes. We hold labour hire licences in Victoria, Queensland, South Australia and the ACT, where licensing is required by law.

  • Do I have to use a licensed labour hire provider?

In states with licensing schemes, host businesses generally must use a licensed provider, and penalties can apply if they don't. Check the requirements in each state where you operate.

  • How quickly can you supply labour hire workers?

For most industrial, warehouse and trade roles, we place pre-screened workers within 24 to 72 hours. Specialist, remote and FIFO roles may need more lead time.

  • Who is responsible for safety on site?

Under WHS law, both the labour hire provider and the host business have duties to keep workers safe. We consult and coordinate with you on hazards, inductions and PPE. We also check in with our workers throughout each assignment.

  • How is labour hire priced?

You pay an hourly charge rate. It covers the worker's wages, superannuation, payroll tax, workers' compensation insurance and our service fee. You get one invoice for all hours worked.

  • Can I offer a labour hire worker a permanent role?

Yes. Many of our workers move into permanent roles with the businesses they're placed with. Conversion terms are set out in your service agreement.

  • Do you supply workers for remote and FIFO sites?

Yes. We supply workers to mine sites, regional plants and remote projects, and manage inductions, mobilisation and WHS requirements.
