We’re seeking a reliable Transfer Station Operator to support day-to-day operations at a busy Resource Recovery/Waste Management Centre in Ballina. You’ll be the first point of contact for visitors, providing helpful, calm customer service while directing vehicles and customers to the correct drop-off areas and encouraging safe, compliant recycling and resource recovery. The role also includes hands-on site support such as general labouring and grounds maintenance (e.g., litter collection, mowing/weeding and basic upkeep), completing standard paperwork (timesheets, work orders and WHS documentation), and working safely in line with site procedures.
Working hours are a key part of this role: you’ll work 7:30am–4:30pm on a rotating roster, starting 2–3 days per week with the potential to increase to full-time hours in early 2027. You must be available Monday to Friday and also commit to at least one weekend day (Saturday or Sunday) per fortnight—regular weekend work is required.
Duties
- Provide friendly, professional customer service to waste centre visitors
- Direct traffic and customers to the correct drop-off areas
- Promote resource recovery and recycling by guiding correct sorting
- Communicate load contents and details to the weighbridge operator
- Advise customers on accepted vs non-accepted waste materials
- Complete physically demanding outdoor work while following site safety requirements
Skills and Experience
- Strong customer service and communication skills (confident dealing with the public)
- Previous experience in physical, hands-on labouring work
- Ability to follow procedures and communicate requirements clearly to customers
- Strong work ethic, reliability, and initiative
- Hepatitis A and B immunisation (required , or willingness to obtain)
Desirable:
- Forklift ticket and practical operating experience
- Waste management / transfer station / resource recovery experience
- FEL tickets & white card
