Technical Officer – Manufacturing and Fabrication
Location: Bundoora East
Hours: 36 hours per week
Salary:$62.48 per hour (inclusive of super)
Contract: ASAP start – 31 October 2026
Work Arrangement: On‑site, full time

We are seeking an experienced Technical Officer – Manufacturing and Fabrication to support the day‑to‑day operation of manufacturing and fabrication workspaces within the STEM College.
Reporting to the Technical Coordinator, you will oversee and maintain workshop and laboratory operations, with a primary focus on engineering fabrication and welding equipment, while also supporting other STEM laboratories and workspaces as required.

This is a hands‑on technical role, suited to someone who enjoys working with equipment, supporting users, maintaining safe systems of work, and ensuring laboratories operate efficiently, safely, and in compliance with legislative and organisational requirements.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee and maintain daily operations across manufacturing and fabrication workshops, particularly welding and fabrication equipment
  • Develop, maintain and implement documentation including SOPs, SWIs, equipment risk assessments and chemical registers
  • Provide practical, day‑to‑day technical advice and training to workshop users, including inductions and safe equipment use
  • Assist with the development of training and induction materials in consultation with the Technical Coordinator
  • Manage and maintain workshop infrastructure, tools, instruments and equipment, including servicing schedules and preventative maintenance plans
  • Monitor consumables and support ordering of materials required for teaching and workshop activities
  • Ensure all laboratories and workspaces operate safely and comply with OH&S legislation, industry standards and organisational policies
  • Identify safety or compliance issues and develop remediation plans where required
  • Assist with acquisition, installation and commissioning of new equipment and resources
  • Work collaboratively with stakeholders across the College to support teaching, research and operational needs
  • Provide support to other teams across the portfolio as required
You will bring:
  • Demonstrated experience operating, maintaining and training users on welding and fabrication equipment
  • Strong knowledge of metal fabrication and general engineering practices
  • Workshop or laboratory operations experience, ideally in a teaching or research setting
  • Sound understanding of OH&S legislation and safe systems of work
  • Strong organisational and problem‑solving skills
  • Ability to work autonomously while contributing effectively within a team
  • Clear communication skills and the ability to work with diverse user groups
  • Alignment with inclusive workplace values and zero tolerance to harassment or discrimination
Qualifications
  • Tertiary qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Sheet Metal, Fitting, Welding and Fabrication, or a related discipline, with relevant industry experience
  • Valid Working with Children Check(mandatory)
