Senior Legal Counsel (6-Month Contract) | WA Government | Perth
About the Role A WA State Government department is seeking an experienced Senior Legal Counsel for a 6-month contract. This is a key advisory role supporting the General Counsel on complex legal matters, litigation, and high-level stakeholder engagement.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide legal advice on contract drafting, negotiation, and interpretation
- Advise on legislation, statutory interpretation, and compliance
- Prepare and review legal documentation
- Support litigation and manage external solicitors and counsel
- Assist with complex commercial negotiations
- Liaise with senior stakeholders, including State Solicitor’s Office and Ministerial offices
- Contribute to policy, governance, and legal strategy development
- Law degree and admission to practice in Western Australia
- Previously worked in State government
- Experience as an in-house legal counsel (public or private), including litigation
- Strong expertise in commercial/contract law and statutory interpretation
- Ability to negotiate complex matters and draft legal documents
- Understanding of WA parliamentary and legislative processes
- Demonstrated personal leadership and stakeholder engagement skills
- Work on high-impact WA Government legal matters
- Exposure to senior leadership and strategic decision-making
