The Opportunity We are seeking an experienced Permits Officer to join a local government team responsible for coordinating and approving activities within roads and public land.
This role is critical to ensuring works and events that impact road users are assessed, approved, and managed in line with legislative and safety requirements.
You will assess permits relating to works in road reserves, activities that significantly interfere with road use, and filming on public land, with a strong focus on reviewing Traffic Management Plans and Traffic Guidance Schemes.
Key Responsibilities
- Assess and approve permit applications to:
- Undertake works within road reserves
- Conduct activities that significantly impact road use
- Film on public land under the Filming Approval Act 2014
- Review Traffic Management Plans to ensure compliance with:
- Road Safety Act 1986
- Road Management Act 2004
- Australian Standard AS1742.3
- Assess and approve Traffic Guidance Schemes
- Ensure permit documentation is complete and meets required standards
- Maintain accurate records across Council electronic systems
- Act as the primary point of contact for permit applicants, providing clear guidance and customer support
- Provide advice to internal teams to support inspections, enforcement, and continuous improvement
- Liaise with internal and external stakeholders, including contractors, developers, and the community
- Current TCD1 / TMD1 qualification (mandatory)
- Experience reviewing and approving permits or Traffic Management Plans
- Strong understanding of traffic management requirements and relevant legislation
- Ability to interpret plans, specifications, and technical documentation
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Confidence dealing with customers, including managing difficult or complex enquiries
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and electronic permit systems
- Local government experience (highly regarded)
