An opportunity is available for an experienced Information & Privacy Officer to join a large, regulated organisation operating within a complex legislative environment. This role suits a detail‑oriented professional who is confident working autonomously, managing competing priorities and meeting strict statutory timeframes.
Reporting within an information governance and privacy function, you will respond to FOI requests, subpoenas and other formal information requests under relevant legislation. You will provide expert advice to internal stakeholders and ensure access decisions are legally sound, defensible and delivered on time.
Key Responsibilities
- Make access decisions by applying the Freedom of Information Act 1982 and relevant transport‑related legislation.
- Process and manage sensitive and high‑profile FOI requests, including those received from media and other public bodies.
- Liaise with applicants, solicitors, insurers and internal and external stakeholders to meet consultation requirements.
- Respond to subpoenas, warrants, statutory orders and other legal information requests within required timeframes.
- Conduct thorough searches for paper and electronic records held by the organisation, its agents and contractors.
- Prepare responses to complaints investigated by the Office of the Victorian Information Commissioner (OVIC).
- Draft submissions and support matters before VCAT, including briefing solicitors and giving evidence where required.
- Investigate privacy incident reports and support responses to privacy breaches in line with Victorian privacy legislation.
- Contribute to policy reviews, continuous improvement initiatives and FOI/privacy awareness training.
- Provide advice to internal teams regarding information release obligations under FOI and privacy legislation.
- Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of relevant legislative changes.
- Demonstrated experience making reviewable decisions within a legislative framework.
- Proven experience processing FOI requests.
- Strong working knowledge of the FOI Act, Privacy & Data Protection Act 2014, and/or Health Records Act 2001.
- Experience working in a legal, regulatory or government environment (desirable).
- Strong organisational and time management skills with the ability to meet tight deadlines.
