A leading Australian energy infrastructure business is seeking an experienced Senior Commissioning Engineer to join their team on a permanent basis.
This is a senior technical role for a commissioning professional who enjoys leading complex testing and commissioning activities across major electrical projects, while providing high‑level technical support to project teams, clients and key stakeholders.
The Opportunity Working across large‑scale transmission, distribution, generation and traction projects, you will take ownership of end‑to‑end commissioning activities, acting as a subject matter expert for primary and secondary systems.
This role offers long‑term stability, exposure to complex HV environments up to 500kV, and the opportunity to play a key role in technically challenging infrastructure projects critical to Australia’s energy network.
Key Responsibilities Testing & Commissioning (Senior Level)
- Lead HV testing and commissioning of primary plant from 415V to 500kV
- Perform secondary injection testing across a broad range of protection schemes
- Test protection relays, control systems, SCADA and communications platforms
- Integrate AC and DC control systems in greenfield and brownfield environments
- Review designs and drawings to validate protection schemes and constructability
- Apply and modify IED settings using OEM software
- Develop commissioning methodologies, test plans, ITPs and acceptance documentation
- Lead and coordinate commissioning teams, including subcontractors
- Develop commissioning strategies that improve safety, efficiency and cost outcomes
- Manage commissioning schedules, outage coordination and staged implementation
- Provide senior technical support to project managers, estimators, designers and site teams
- Mentor and support commissioning engineers, technicians and electricians
- Drive a strong safety culture and ensure compliance with WHS requirements
- Identify, manage and mitigate testing and commissioning risks
- Engage effectively with clients, senior management and external stakeholders
- Provide clear reporting on commissioning progress and performance
- Degree qualified in Electrical / Electronic Engineering
- 5+ years’ experience in testing and commissioning of primary and secondary systems
- Strong understanding of power systems protection principles and applications
- Proven experience leading commissioning activities in utility or infrastructure environments
- IEC 61850 exposure highly regarded
- Omicron Test Universe & Primary Test Manager
- Doble Protection Suite & ProTest
- CMC256 / CMC356 / CPC100 / CT analyser
- SCADA platforms and OEM protection systems (SEL, ABB, Siemens, GE, Micom/Areva)
- Senior‑level technical confidence and decision‑making ability
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills
