Client-Side Works Inspector

Major Works & Infrastructure

Our client is seeking an experienced Client-Side Works Inspector to support the successful delivery of major construction projects across the port on a six month temporary basis. Working closely with the Project Manager and wider project team, this role plays a key part in overseeing contractor performance and ensuring all works meet the ports standards, policies, and contractual requirements.
As a key site-based representative, you’ll ensure construction activities are delivered safely, efficiently, and in line with approved designs, technical specifications, and industry best practice.
 
About the Role

In this position, you’ll oversee day-to-day construction progress, monitor contractor compliance, and support project teams through all phases of delivery. You’ll take responsibility for quality assurance, safety oversight, scope alignment, and coordination of permits, inspections, and acceptance of completed works.
Your work will help ensure the ports major infrastructure projects are executed to the highest standard, on budget and on schedule.
 
Key Responsibilities

  • Support project delivery by monitoring daily construction activity across port infrastructure projects, ensuring works progress safely, efficiently, and within approved timeframes and budgets.
  • Provide guidance to Project Managers, Engineers, and Contractors on project requirements, including work plans, procedures, permits, SWMS/JSEAs, and other control measures.
  • Observe and verify contractor work to ensure compliance with specifications and provide regular progress updates to the Project Manager.
  • Prepare and maintain reporting relating to progress, quality, cost, and overall contractor performance. Conduct final inspections of completed works.
  • Foster positive working relationships between the port and its contractors.
  • Assist in preparing scopes of work, technical specifications, site assessments, and feasibility reviews for tender and construction activities.
  • Support tender evaluation and contribute to contractor assessments.
  • Act as an on-site representative and Works Inspector throughout the contract period.
  • Contribute to resource planning to ensure efficient coordination of project activities.
  • Identify and manage hazards, risks, and issues, including assisting with investigations when required.
  • Coordinate and review permits, risk management plans, and job safety analyses to ensure all prerequisites are met prior to starting work.
  • Oversee site and safety inductions for contractor personnel and ensure compliance with safety management plans and statutory obligations.
  • Maintain detailed construction diaries and records.
  • Facilitate communication between contractors, project teams, port operations, and other stakeholders to minimise operational disruption.
  • Participate in pre-starts, toolbox meetings, progress meetings, and monthly performance reviews.
  • Liaise regularly with the Senior Project Manager to raise concerns, provide updates, and support issue resolution.
  • Assist with tender documentation, evaluations, and recommendation reports.
  • Support project budgets, cost estimates, and scheduling activities.
  • Work with the Project Cost Controller and Planner to monitor progress and validate contractor performance against scheduled milestones.

  Qualifications and Experience
  • Minimum 7 years or more demonstrated project management or construction supervision experience.
  • Well-developed knowledge of Occupational Health & Safety Act/Regulations and demonstrated ability to implement and ensure a safe work environment.
  • Candidates to have completed the Identify, Locate and Pothole course (R11CFM202E) so that they can issue excavation permits. Agency to cover cost if successful.
 
Desirable
  • Qualifications in Contract Administration and or Project Management.
  • Tertiary or Trade Qualifications related to construction, projects or engineering discipline.
 
Technical, Professional and Specialist Skills
  • Coordination and supervisory skills with experience managing construction in industrial brownfields environment.
  • Experience in formulating, implementing, and managing construction scopes of works, specifications, scheduling and budget estimates.
  • Project Supervision, Contract Management and Administration skills.
  • Knowledge of statutory legislation and regulations relating to construction management.
  • Working knowledge of high-risk construction activities, their associated Codes of Practice, Guidance Notes, Australian Standards and HSE Requirements.
  • Well-developed knowledge of WHS Act/ Regulations and demonstrated ability to implement and ensure a safe work environment.
  • Strong knowledge of construction methods, materials and regulations.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications.
  • Excellent written, verbal, communication and negotiation skills.
