About the Opportunity
We’re seeking an experienced and proactive Technical Officer
to support Food and Process Chemistry laboratories within the STEM College. With expanding lab spaces and growing student demand, this role is critical in ensuring safe, compliant and high‑quality technical environments for teaching and research.
You will oversee day‑to‑day lab operations, equipment maintenance, inductions, and safety processes, while providing expert support to staff, students and researchers.
What You’ll Do
- Manage daily operations across Food & Process Chemistry and related STEM laboratories
- Maintain and update lab documentation (SOPs, SWIs, risk assessments, chemical registers)
- Provide inductions, technical training and day‑to‑day support to lab users
- Oversee equipment maintenance schedules and preventative servicing
- Maintain clean, safe and operational laboratory environments
- Manage consumables and support equipment procurement
- Develop, implement and review safe work practices and OH&S documentation
- Assist with acquisition, installation and commissioning of new equipment
- Collaborate with technical teams and stakeholders to support teaching and research delivery
- Experience in the operation, maintenance and training of laboratory equipment, ideally including DSC, rheometers, particle sizing instruments, FTIR and freeze dryers.
- Strong knowledge and experience in Food Science, Chemical Engineering or similar laboratory environments, ideally in teaching or research settings.
- Proven laboratory operations experience, including equipment management, compliance processes and workflow coordination.
- Sound understanding of OH&S legislation, laboratory safety standards and compliance frameworks.
- Demonstrated initiative, problem‑solving skills and the ability to work both autonomously and as part of a team.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively across diverse groups
