Senior Mechanical Project Engineer – Rio Tinto Weipa Operations

Rio Tinto Weipa Bauxite Operations is seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Project Engineer to join the Sustaining Capital team. This hands-on, site-based role leads mechanical construction, installation and commissioning across a diverse capital project portfolio.

The Role

You will manage end-to-end delivery of mechanical, piping and structural work packages, ensuring safe, compliant and efficient execution. This includes contractor oversight, QA/QC, procurement coordination, scheduling, cost control and commissioning support. Projects include tank commissioning, town water and camp installations. Roster is 9:5 on site at Weipa

Key Responsibilities

• Deliver mechanical packages from construction to commissioning
• Lead contractor performance and compliance
• Oversee QA/QC, inspections and design verification
• Manage procurement, schedules and cost reporting
• Identify project risks and improvement opportunities
• Maintain strong safety leadership and reporting

About You

• Degree in Mechanical Engineering
• 5–8+ years site-based project delivery (mining/heavy industry)
• Strong construction, testing and commissioning experience
• Proven contractor management capability
• Excellent communication, problem-solving and technical skills
• Advanced MS Excel and Word
• Experience in contractor-delivered projects is highly regarded
