Mechanical / Structural Project Specialist (Project Engineer) Site-based | Pilbara, WA | 5:2 / 4:3 roster
Rate: $100.00 – $105.00 per hour
A Tier 1 mining company is seeking an experienced Mechanical / Structural Project Specialist (Project Engineer)
to support long-term structural integrity works at a major Pilbara operation. This is a site-based role focused on the remediation and management of structural defects across processing and non-process infrastructure, with a strong forward pipeline of work extending 10–15 years.
Reporting to the Project Lead, you will play a key role in contractor management, field execution, shutdown coordination, and assurance of safety, quality, and delivery.
About the Role This position supports structural integrity projects across both high-grade and low-grade processing facilities, as well as critical non-process infrastructure. You will be hands-on in the field, providing technical oversight, validating progress, and ensuring contractor performance aligns with project, safety, and quality expectations.
The role operates on a 5:2 / 4:3 site roster
and is suited to someone who enjoys being close to the work, engaging with contractors, and contributing to long-term asset integrity.
Key Responsibilities General & In-Field Activities
- Review, approve, and support contractor methodologies and work packs, ensuring practicality and constructability
- Verify weekly quantities completed (welding, compensation plating, painting, etc.) to support progress tracking and payment claims
- Review, approve, track, and monitor contractor job cards and scope completion
- Conduct daily field inspections to monitor progress and quality of work
- Review and approve contractor shutdown schedules, resourcing plans, and methodologies
- Liaise with shutdown coordinators to integrate scopes into operational shutdown schedules
- Generate daily shutdown reports during shutdown execution
- Develop scoping documentation, bills of quantities, and variation scopes
- Track and report the status of contractor deliverables
- Support assurance of contractor compliance with Quality and HSE plans
- Assist with review and assurance of contractor risk assessments
- Complete leadership in the field activities including JHA reviews and safety interactions
- Attend weekly contractor progress meetings and shutdown meetings
- Participate in work area inspections and site walks as required
- Support quantity surveyors with review and approval of daywork sheets
- Assist the Project Lead with project schedule development, updates, and monitoring
You will ideally have:
- Tertiary qualifications in:
- Structural or Mechanical Engineering, or
- Fabrication and/or Industrial Coating Technologies
- Proven project and site experience within mining, heavy industry, or similar environments
- Background in mechanical, fabrication, or paint supervision (highly regarded)
- Broad understanding of multidisciplinary interfaces including mechanical, structural, electrical, civil, and scaffolding
- Excellent communication skills and a collaborative working style
- Strong safety focus and attention to detail
- Proficiency in MS Excel and MS Word
