An exciting opportunity has become available for an experienced Technical Officer
to join a leading STEM teaching and research environment. This role supports the smooth operation of modern laboratory facilities and plays a critical part in ensuring safe, compliant, and high‑quality support for staff, students, and researchers.
About the Role
Reporting to the Technical Coordinator, the Technical Officer will oversee daily operations across a range of STEM laboratories and workspaces. The role provides technical expertise, ensures safety and compliance, and supports both teaching and research activities across PC1 and PC2‑level facilities.
You will be a key point of contact within the laboratory environment, offering expert guidance on hazardous chemicals, biosafety requirements, and safe working practices.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the day‑to‑day operations of STEM laboratories, including PC1 and PC2 facilities and regulated growth rooms.
- Provide expert advice on hazardous chemical management, including storage, handling, disposal, and emergency response.
- Develop, implement, and maintain emergency response plans and ensure all personnel are trained in relevant procedures.
- Maintain laboratory documentation such as SOPs, SWIs, equipment risk assessments, and chemical registers.
- Ensure research activities comply with all relevant legislation, including WHS, OGTR, and dangerous goods regulations.
- Deliver induction programs and targeted safety training for staff, students, and researchers.
- Maintain laboratory equipment, infrastructure, and preventative maintenance schedules.
- Review and approve risk assessments for research projects in collaboration with stakeholders.
- Manage procurement and maintain adequate consumable inventory levels.
- Ensure all workspaces meet OH&S, legislative, and internal policy requirements.
- Support the planning, acquisition, installation, and commissioning of complex laboratory equipment.
- Undertake additional duties as required to support technical operations across the STEM portfolio.
- Strong experience in hazardous chemical management within biomedical, biotechnology, biosciences, or related laboratory environments.
- Practical understanding of WHS, dangerous goods legislation, and PC1/PC2 laboratory standards.
- Knowledge of OGTR regulations and experience working within OGTR‑certified facilities.
- Experience with scheduled drugs and poisons legislation is highly desirable.
- Proven ability to manage laboratory operations, equipment, and safety documentation.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to deliver clear guidance and training to a wide range of laboratory users.
- Demonstrated initiative, problem-solving ability, and a collaborative mindset.

- Degree in Biological Sciences (or a related discipline), coupled with substantial relevant experience.
