Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the day‑to‑day operations of STEM laboratories, including PC1 and PC2 facilities and regulated growth rooms.
  • Provide expert advice on hazardous chemical management, including storage, handling, disposal, and emergency response.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain emergency response plans and ensure all personnel are trained in relevant procedures.
  • Maintain laboratory documentation such as SOPs, SWIs, equipment risk assessments, and chemical registers.
  • Ensure research activities comply with all relevant legislation, including WHS, OGTR, and dangerous goods regulations.
  • Deliver induction programs and targeted safety training for staff, students, and researchers.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment, infrastructure, and preventative maintenance schedules.
  • Review and approve risk assessments for research projects in collaboration with stakeholders.
  • Manage procurement and maintain adequate consumable inventory levels.
  • Ensure all workspaces meet OH&S, legislative, and internal policy requirements.
  • Support the planning, acquisition, installation, and commissioning of complex laboratory equipment.
  • Undertake additional duties as required to support technical operations across the STEM portfolio.
About You
  • Strong experience in hazardous chemical management within biomedical, biotechnology, biosciences, or related laboratory environments.
  • Practical understanding of WHS, dangerous goods legislation, and PC1/PC2 laboratory standards.
  • Knowledge of OGTR regulations and experience working within OGTR‑certified facilities.
  • Experience with scheduled drugs and poisons legislation is highly desirable.
  • Proven ability to manage laboratory operations, equipment, and safety documentation.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to deliver clear guidance and training to a wide range of laboratory users.
  • Demonstrated initiative, problem-solving ability, and a collaborative mindset.
  • Commitment to fostering a safe, inclusive, respectful, and positive workplace culture.
  • Degree in Biological Sciences (or a related discipline), coupled with substantial relevant experience.
