About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Hydrologic and Hydraulic Modelling Engineer to provide expert technical advice and support for flood studies, flood risk management plans, and development assessments. You will play a key role in leading hydrologic and hydraulic modelling projects, delivering high-quality technical outputs, and contributing to the safety and resilience of our community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and conduct hydrologic and hydraulic modelling using industry-standard software (e.g., TUFLOW) for flood studies and capital works investigations.
  • Provide specialist advice on modelling inputs, methodologies, and results interpretation.
  • Review and assess consultant modelling reports ensuring compliance with industry standards and Council requirements.
  • Support the development and delivery of Floodplain Risk Management Studies and Plans (FRMSPs), including scenario testing and mitigation option assessments.
  • Prepare clear and professional maps, figures, and technical documentation for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Assist the development assessment team by reviewing flood impact assessments, overland flow studies, and advising on flood-related development conditions.
  • Mentor and train internal staff to build modelling capability within the team.
  • Engage with community members and stakeholders by presenting technical findings in an accessible and understandable manner.
  • Provide guidance and support to team members as required.
Qualifications and Experience
Essential:
  • Tertiary qualification in Civil Engineering or related discipline.
  • Class C Driver’s Licence.
  • Extensive experience in flood modelling using industry-standard software.
  • Strong understanding of Australian Rainfall & Runoff (ARR2019) and NSW Flood Risk Management Manual.
  • Proven ability to review, interpret, and communicate complex technical results to diverse audiences.
  • Experience preparing and reviewing flood studies and flood risk management plans.
  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, project management, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams and liaise with consultants, government agencies, and the community.
Desirable:
  • Postgraduate qualifications in water engineering, hydrology, or floodplain management.
  • Proficiency in GIS software such as MapInfo and QGIS.
  • Knowledge of local government processes, development assessment, and floodplain risk management frameworks.
  • Experience working within local councils or similar government bodies.
