Mechanic – 6-Month Temporary Contract
Location:
Local Council – East Melbourne
Hours:
Monday to Friday, 6:00am – 3:00pm (38 hours per week, excluding Public Holidays)
Pay Rate:$54.58 per hour + super (includes casual loading)
We are seeking an experienced Mechanic
to join a small workshop team with a local council in the east of Melbourne on a 6-month temporary assignment. Extension may be considered closer to the end of the contract, but is not guaranteed.
This role involves servicing, maintaining, and repairing a diverse fleet of heavy vehicles, plant, and equipment including side loaders, rear loaders, semi-trailers, prime movers, forklifts, and loaders. While the role is based primarily at the council depot, you may occasionally be required to attend breakdowns offsite to assess and arrange towing if necessary.
Key Responsibilities
- Service, maintain, diagnose faults, and repair council vehicles, plant, and equipment.
- Complete daily repair and maintenance schedules.
- Provide condition reports and ensure downtime is minimised.
- Fabricate metal products in the workshop as required.
- Maintain a safe, clean, and compliant workshop environment.
- Liaise with operators, apprentices, contractors, and other team members.
- Provide on-the-job training and guidance as needed.
- Assist in setting priorities and achieving performance targets.
- Ensure compliance with council policies, safety standards, and legislative requirements.
- Deliver high levels of customer service to both internal and external stakeholders.
- Current Australian Driver’s Licence to drive a Heavy Rigid vehicle (essential).
- Additional endorsements (HR/HC) will be highly regarded.
- Industry experience with heavy vehicles, heavy mechanical plant and equipment.
- Demonstrated experience using a range of mechanical plant.
- Knowledge of safe lifting and manual handling practices with physical ability to undertake manual labour.
- Strong time management skills.
- Good teamwork and interpersonal communication skills.
- Sufficient written skills to complete daily work records.
- Competent IT/data entry skills (emails, digital timesheets, OHS reporting, online learning entry).
- Ability to pass a satisfactory pre-employment National Police Check, Medical Check and Working with Children Check.
- Ability to provide a VicRoads Driving History Report.
- All tools supplied (with additional tools sourced as required).
