Project: QAL Wall Raise Self‑Perform 2026
Location: Gladstone
Duration: 1 year, rolling contract
Roster: Monday to Friday
Hourly Rate: $122.00 per hour plus superannuation 
 
 
Chandler Macleod is partnering with Rio Tinto to recruit an experienced Construction Superintendent to support the delivery of the QAL Wall Raise Self‑Perform 2026 project in Gladstone. This is a critical leadership position responsible for guiding construction execution, ensuring full compliance with engineering certifications, quality standards, dam safety obligations, and environmental approvals.
 
About the Role
In this site‑based leadership role, you will provide operational oversight and direction to a workforce of 55+, ensuring construction activities are executed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with approved designs, specifications, and statutory requirements. You will play a pivotal role in the successful self‑perform delivery of the QAL Wall Raise, maintaining alignment with project milestones and quality expectations.
 
Key Responsibilities

Quality & Compliance

  • Lead implementation and ongoing adherence to the  Quality Management Plan (QMP).
  • Compile and submit a detailed  Construction Method Statement  for review and approval by the Certifying Engineer and Responsible Dam Engineer prior to commencement of works.
  • Identify and report quality system improvements and design issues impacting productivity.
  • Ensure compliance with Environmental Authority (EA Permit Cl. L11(b)) requirements prior to construction commencement.
  • Participate in the development of solutions where  Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs)  are raised and oversee implementation of remedial actions.
  • Contribute to alternative solutions when  Technical Queries (TQs)  are required.
Engineering Governance & Risk
  • Ensure construction activities align with approved design drawings, specifications, and technical queries.
  • Where deviation from certified design is unavoidable, facilitate completion of formal risk assessments with the Responsible Dam Engineer and Certifying Engineer prior to direction being issued.
  • Ensure appropriate approvals are obtained for Class 3 and Class 4 risks (D5 Manager / GM approval as required).
Leadership & Delivery
  • Lead and direct a team of 55 construction personnel.
  • Drive a strong safety culture and ensure compliance with statutory and dam safety obligations.
  • Maintain productivity, cost efficiency, and construction quality standards.
  • Provide clear direction to site teams to ensure alignment with project milestones and quality objectives.
 
About You
  • Extensive experience in large‑scale civil or dam construction environments.
  • Strong knowledge of quality management systems within capital project delivery.
  • Experience working within engineering certification and environmental authority frameworks.
  • Demonstrated capability in leading large construction teams.
  • Solid understanding of risk management processes within regulated infrastructure projects.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with engineering authorities, environmental stakeholders, and project leadership.
