Communications Systems Specialist

Department: Operational Technology
Start Date: March 2026
Contract Length: 6 Months
Roster: FIFO from Perth | 8:6 roster | 12-hour days

About the Role
The Communications Systems Specialist supports the installation, operation, and maintenance of communications equipment and infrastructure across mining operations. Reporting to the Communications Supervisor, this role ensures the reliable performance of TETRA radio systems, Cambium networks, wireless mesh technologies, LTE networks, and associated infrastructure.
The position involves setting up and relocating communications trailers, performing routine inspections, and conducting preventative and corrective maintenance across communications systems. The successful candidate will provide hands-on technical support, fault diagnosis, and repairs while contributing to continuous improvement initiatives.
Working under supervision, the Communications Systems Specialist plays a key role in maintaining reliable field communications, adhering to safety standards, maintaining accurate records, and delivering responsive technical support to operational teams.

Key Accountabilities

  • Provide detailed input into shift handover logs as required.
  • Ensure accurate historical data is recorded in SAP and maintain compliance with work management processes, including notifications and work orders. Complete PM01 & PM02 work orders with accurate time confirmations and raise notifications as required.
  • Provide technical input into planning and optimisation of mining communications infrastructure, including TETRA radio systems and wireless networks supporting fleet management systems.
  • Complete breakdown repairs in a timely manner, targeting 100% completion of scheduled maintenance work with minimal rescheduling.
  • Monitor network and communications system performance, ensuring infrastructure integrity and identifying continuous improvement opportunities. Analyse failure trends and recommend equipment or component replacements.
  • Provide technical advice and support to maintenance teams regarding communication hardware faults.
  • Monitor wireless signal strength across active mining areas. Conduct preventative maintenance inspections on communication trailers and tower infrastructure. Relocate communication trailers as required to maintain effective radio coverage.
  • Respond to incidents and service requests logged through service management systems. Maintain the integrity of fleet communication databases, including TETRA digital two-way systems.
  • Support project work as defined by weekly maintenance schedules.
  • Provide on-call support for network and communications fault resolution and remediation. Deliver timely updates on system status and fault resolution.
  • Provide technical advice and support to teams and departments regarding communications equipment in use.
Required Attributes
Experience
Highly Desirable:
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in an electronics or communications role
  • Cisco wireless networks
  • Fleet management systems
  • TETRA digital two-way radio systems
  • Cambium radio networks
  • LTE networks
  • Process control systems
Well Regarded:
  • Mining site and FIFO experience
  • Working at heights and tower climbing experience
  • Elevated Work Platform (EWP) certification
  • Experience operating 4WD vehicles and towing trailers
Knowledge & Skills
  • Strong computer literacy
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Proven fault-finding experience on communications systems and networks
  • Strong commitment to safety, quality, and teamwork
  • Ability to diagnose and repair hardware components, including cable terminations
  • Ability to interpret schematic drawings and wiring diagrams
  • Ability to perform physical maintenance on mining systems hardware and communications infrastructure
Qualifications
  • Certificate IV in Communications (well regarded)
  • Current C Class Driver’s Licence (Manual)
  • Open Cabling Licence with endorsements (Coaxial, Structured & Fibre) – desirable
  • 4WD training – desirable
  • HRWL: DG & RB – desirable
  • Apply First Aid certification
  • CPR certification
