MSP in Mining

Record commodity prices, high Operator turn-over and a constrained market due to Covid vaccination requirements led to a problematic supply and demand imbalance.

Background

Our client is a dominant force in the Australian mining industry, with a particular interest in coal.

At the time of engaging Chandler Macleod for a MSP arrangement to supply Operators, coal prices and demand for the commodity was as high as ever, yet labour mobility and unemployment was historically low.

Other challenges facing the client included:

  • Unusually high Operator turn-over
  • Pay rates not the highest in the market
  • Lack of job security further impacting labour hire tenure
  • Truck hours/time in field below requirements
  • Unplanned turnover putting further strain on training capability – increased cost and unproductive time
  • Internal recruitment processes taking too long
  • Diversity on sites, previously a strength, started falling below benchmarks and KPIs

Our Solutions

We streamlined the employment contract signing process by utilising a new electronic document platform. This enabled a faster contract review turnaround by the candidate and all new starter documentation was gathered into a single file. The new and improved process provided a significant improvement to the candidate experience.

Another solution was to move to a single provider for all background screening, which was integrated into our applicant tracking system (ATS). This allowed for candidates that are selected for verification to be sent directly for validation, with results then returned into the ATS against the candidate profile.

We also had the ability to track the progress of the candidates, with an easy access quick view to check the candidate status and the ability for our recruiters to accelerate the process where necessary to meet the tight delivery timeframe agreements.

All these process and system enhancements provided huge improvements to the time to fill a role, data integrity and customer experience throughout the recruiting and placement process.

Outcomes

Some excellent outcomes were achieved during this engagement, including a reduction in turnover and time to hire. The optimistic stretch diversity targets were achieved which was the icing on the cake.

Some of the other beneficial outcomes for the client were enterprise advisory of wage and compensation levels, successful implementation of a vendor management system that streamlined ordering process, leading to improved customer satisfaction and improved dashboarding and visibility through the hiring process.

The solution was so successful it would be leveraged into other areas of the client’s business.
