Electrical Engineer - Principle Protection Engineer
Our client, a leading electricity distribution company, is seeking a highly skilled Senior/Principal Protection Engineer to join their team on a high-profile brownfield project focused on power distribution networks and substations. This role offers an opportunity to apply advanced engineering expertise in a collaborative, innovative environment, ensuring the reliability and safety of critical power infrastructure.
Tasks:
- Lead the design, analysis, and implementation of protection systems for power distribution networks and substations operating at 11kV, 33kV, 66kV, 132kV, and up to 220kV.
- Perform detailed fault analysis, including short-circuit, earth fault, and transient fault studies, to determine fault levels and ensure system stability.
- Develop and configure protection settings for relays, including overcurrent, earth fault, distance, and differential protection schemes, ensuring compatibility with network requirements.
- Review and validate protection designs for suitability, ensuring compliance with Australian Standards
- Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams to integrate protection systems with SCADA, automation, and control systems in substations
- Conduct protection coordination studies to ensure selective tripping and minimize outages in distribution networks
- Perform root cause analysis for protection system failures and implement corrective measures to enhance network reliability
- Provide technical guidance on protection schemes for brownfield upgrades and retrofitting of existing substations
- Prepare detailed technical reports, specifications, and documentation for protection systems and network performance
- Ensure compliance with safety regulations, including arc flash hazard assessments and risk mitigation strategies
Required Skills:
- Modelling system faults to determine fault levels
- Determine required protection settings
- Review protection designs for suitability
- Minimum of 8 years of experience in protection engineering within the power distribution or transmission sector
- Proven track record of delivering protection systems for brownfield substation projects
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
Education / Certifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering
- Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng), Registered Professional Engineer of Queensland considered an advantage (RPEQ)
