Assistant Director – Regulatory Best Practice
 
Location: Multiple locations (Adelaide, Albury, Brisbane, Canberra, Dubbo, Goondiwindi, Melbourne, Mildura, Sydney)
Job Type: Full-time, Non-ongoing (12 months)
Security Clearance: Baseline preferred
Classification: Executive Level 1 equivalent
 
About the Role
Are you passionate about integrity, regulatory reform, and public sector performance? A high-performing regulatory agency is seeking an experienced Assistant Director to join its Regulatory Best Practice team. This role plays a key part in strengthening regulatory performance and integrity across water compliance efforts in one of Australia’s most important river systems.
You will contribute to strategic policy initiatives, influence national reforms, and ensure best practice regulatory principles are embedded across operations. Your work will directly support the agency’s mission to uphold lawful, transparent, and accountable water management.
 
Key Responsibilities

  • Provide expert advice and prepare policy submissions and reports on complex regulatory and legislative matters
  • Contribute to and review legislative reforms affecting the agency’s functions and jurisdiction
  • Support cross-agency collaboration on sensitive intergovernmental matters
  • Develop, monitor and report on performance measures and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Guide and support internal teams in applying regulatory policy and best practice
  • Lead and present findings in executive-level workshops
  • Mentor junior staff and foster a collaborative, high-performance culture
 
About You
You are a critical and creative thinker with excellent written and verbal communication skills. You bring a structured approach to problem-solving and can work across diverse policy areas with ease. You’ll need the ability to interpret complex information and translate it into accessible, practical guidance.
 
To be successful, you will have:
  • Proven experience in public policy analysis or regulatory reform
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and intergovernmental collaboration skills
  • Ability to work flexibly across teams and projects in a dynamic environment
  • A commitment to integrity, transparency, and high-quality regulatory outcomes
  • Experience in preparing formal advice, briefing materials, and submissions
 
Eligibility Requirements
  • Must be an Australian citizen
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Baseline security clearance
  • Relevant tertiary qualification (graduate level mandatory, postgraduate preferred) in areas such as Law, Environmental Science, or Humanities
 
Desirable Experience
  • Regulatory impact analysis
  • Intergovernmental relations or agreements
  • Supporting regulatory practice in a government or compliance-focused environment
