APS6 Project Manager – Sustainable Fishing
Location: Canberra (ACT) or Townsville (QLD)
Salary: APS6 Level (as per APS award)
Employment Type: Full-time, Temporary (until 30 June 2025)
Security Clearance: Must be able to obtain a National Police Check

Chandler Macleod, in partnership with our Federal Government client, is seeking a motivated and experienced Project Manager – Sustainable Fishing to join a dynamic and purpose-driven team protecting one of Australia's most treasured natural assets.

About the Role As an APS6 Project Manager – Sustainable Fishing, you will play a vital role in ensuring fishing activities within the Marine Park are ecologically sustainable, support species and habitat protection, and enhance Reef resilience. You will help shape strategic policy, manage critical projects, and work with a range of stakeholders including government bodies, Traditional Owners, and fishing sectors to achieve long-term conservation goals.

Working as part of a high-performing Strategic Policy team, you will contribute across a range of initiatives such as Reef 2050, Protected Species, Sustainable Fisheries, and World Heritage engagement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and delivery of policies, plans, and programs focused on sustainable fishing and conservation.

  • Provide project management support across work packages, including planning, implementation, and reporting.

  • Prepare high-quality written advice, briefings, and policy documentation for senior leadership, stakeholders, and external forums.

  • Collaborate with cross-government and community partners to support reef management actions.

  • Represent the Reef Authority in external forums and build trusted relationships with key stakeholders.

  • Contribute to broader team initiatives and emerging policy challenges in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.


About You You are a passionate environmental or marine professional with a strong policy and project management background. You are strategic, results-driven, and thrive in complex regulatory environments. You bring:

  • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills across all levels.

  • A track record in delivering quality outcomes in strategic or regulatory projects.

  • Understanding of fisheries management, marine conservation, or Great Barrier Reef matters.

  • The ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

  • Sound judgement, analytical capabilities, and a commitment to public service values.

Essential Criteria
  • Tertiary qualifications and/or equivalent relevant experience in a marine or environmental discipline.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage projects and contribute to high-quality policy development.

Desirable Criteria
  • Experience working in or understanding of Great Barrier Reef management and Australian fisheries policy.

  • Background in regulatory or government processes.

  • Willingness to travel, including overnight stays where required.
