Our Federal Government client is seeking to engage a Workplace Relation Officer on a contract until April 2021, with potential extensions of 12 months.

Position Overview

Industrial relations professionals facilitate, negotiate and provide advice on workplace pay and conditions. Assistant Directors - Industrial Relations may lead a multi-disciplinary team to ensure consistent expert advice on industrial relations services and related activities and matters for the agency. They manage the industrial relations functions internally and externally including but not limited to: complex people management and HR matters, legislative interpretation and consultancy/case management, investigations, legal matters, dispute resolution, policy development, union, enterprise agreement.

Assistant Directors - Industrial Relations exercise a considerable degree of independence and undertakes a leadership role, with work being performed under the general guidance of senior staff. They manage detailed projects or programs and maintain relationships with stakeholders.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • provide expert technical and specialised advice, support and education to HR staff on a range of highly complex industrial and workplace issues and disputes
  • assist in the research, development, management and implementation of the enterprise bargaining agreement, undertake negotiations and represent the agency in dealings with unions and other industrial bodies
  • develop and implement policies, guidelines, policy frameworks and other supporting documentation to ensure the agency is compliant with industrial and workplace relations laws, provide advice on industrial awards and agreements, and negotiate pay rates and conditions
  • research, analyse and apply problem solving skills to develop innovative solutions to meet clients requirements/ and or enable informed decision making
  • develop and maintain productive stakeholder relationships and liaise, advise and negotiate effectively with key stakeholders including management, staff, industrial organisations, other industry bodies and external agencies
  • exercise delegations in accordance with legislation and guidelines.

  • demonstrate analytical, interpretive and problem solving skills to form views, provide advice and make effective evidence-based decisions
  • effectively lead, coach and mentor a team while managing competing priorities and changes in strategic direction
  • self-identify increased need for skills, or emerging/future skills required for EL staff within HR such as; numeracy, data, storytelling, consultation, agile, growth mindset.
