Our Federal Government client is seeking to engage a Visitor Services Officer on a contract for 1 months with potential extension.

About the Role:

Visitor Services Officers provide frontline customer service, staff the Information Desk in the Village Centre and deliver children's birthday parties and tours and workshops. They are the face of the National Arboretum Canberra, providing 5 star customer service to its diverse audience. As a temporary Visitor Services Officer, the successful candidate be primarily staffing the information desk, answering visitor questions, responding to first aid incidents and delivering high quality visitor experience. This temporary role will work every Friday 8.45-4.30pm and alternate Saturday and Sundays 8.45-4.30pm, additional shifts may be required.

To undertake this role successfully, you will have experience in customer service and tour delivery, enjoy engaging with visitors and sharing information to enhance their experience.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under general direction and supervision:

  • Work collaboratively with the team to maintain day to day operations of the Village Centre including:
    • first aid and incident response
    • take bookings for regular guided activities using cloud-based software, handling cash and reconciling takings
    • inbox monitoring, replying to, and escalating requests as required
    • promote Arboretum experiences and products
    • assist with events as required including but not limited to: moving event signage, exhibition panels, interpretation units, furniture, standing for long periods etc.
    • supporting volunteer colleagues in the Village Centre, including using volunteer database Better Impact
  • Provide a high level of customer service in welcoming visitors to the National Arboretum Canberra, providing information regarding the programs, activities, and facilities available. Respond to first level public enquires and issues and, where necessary, direct visitors to appropriate sources for further or more detailed information.
  • Act in various roles under the Emergency Control Organisation including but not limited to: Chief Fire Warden, Deputy Chief Fire Warden and First Aid Officer in addition to being the first point of contact for customer queries and emergency situations.
  • Understand and work within the ACTPS Code of Conduct and ACTPS values of respect, integrity, collaboration and innovation, and model behaviour consistent with the ACTPS Respect Equity and Diversity framework.
  • Adhere to all obligations, responsibilities and legislative requirements under the current Work Health and safety (WHS) Acts and regulations, ensuring all areas under supervision are monitored for WHS risks and hazards and are reviewed regularly.
  • Other duties as required.

Skills and Experience


  • Demonstrated experience delivering high quality customer service to visitors of all ages and from a diverse range of cultural backgrounds
  • Well-developed tour delivery skills, with experience delivering tours and educational programs to visitors of all ages
  • Confidence or willingness to use information technology systems, including cloud-based software and the MS Office suite of programs
  • Sound written communication skills with the ability to respond to general emails, edit documents and monitor digital calendars


  • Experience working in a busy and physical work environment including undertaking multiple work demands, high-pressure and emergency situations


  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, make decisions, as well work in a team environment with a positive and supportive attitude.
  • Model behaviours consistent with the ACT Government's Respect, Equity and Diversity Framework, the Code of Conduct (Values and Signature Behaviours) and lead safe work practices that are in accordance with the Directorate's Work Health and Safety system


  • Current Driver's licence.
  • Current First Aid Certificate.
  • Current Working with Vulnerable People registration.
  • Ability to undertake manual handling as required.
  • Willingness to work rostered weekends/after business hours.
  • Ability to work a fixed roster: Every Friday 8.45-4.30 and alternate weekends Saturday 8.45-4.30 and Sunday 8.45-4.30.
