Our Federal Government client is seeking to engage a Training Officer on a contract for 3 Months, with potential extensions of 3 months.

Position Overview

This position will provide support to assist with coordinating training requirements at the APS5. The position will be based in Canberra and provide regular reports to the Manager on the progression of high priority training during the period of engagement.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Support effective relationships within the community and all staff to implement training initiatives that build capability and capacity.
  • Accountable to the development of an Employment and Training Strategy:
    • Oversee the operational delivery of the Junior Ranger and Traineeship Programs (including coordinating school visits by several other staff and work rotations for trainees)
    • Assist staff to achieve capability development plans and to be active participants in managing their own development (with emphasis supporting ongoing, non-ongoing and casual Indigenous staff to understand the national training agenda).
    • Liaise with Division HR Team to implement an effective mentoring program into the workplace and to roll out programs that build capacity within the community.
    • Represent the client at community and on meetings with key stakeholders in regard to capacity building and training programs for pre-employment; youth engagement; work readiness development; and other targeted group and individual career development programs.
  • Accountable for the identification and coordination of accredited and non-accredited training programs.
    • Manage the effective delivery of mandatory and non-mandatory training for staff by; identifying training needs and providers, assisting with delivery of training, maintain effective and accessible individual training records and preparation of reports
    • Identify key requirements that build the training budget in accordance with financial and procurement guidelines.
  • Provide a Secretariat support service to the Training Committee including schedule meetings, circulate meeting papers; record minutes of meetings and coordinate follow up action items.
  • Effectively contribute as a member of a team and share the Traditional Owner's vision for the future, participating in the exchange of knowledge, experience and skills between Indigenous and non-Indigenous staff; the community; and the public.

Mandatory Requirements:

  • An awareness of issues affecting Indigenous people and other staff in remote locations and the ability to contribute sensitively and effectively to the joint management of the park as well as developing and supporting relationships based on mutual trust, respect and consideration of values and culture.
  • Proven experience in managing training data including recording individual staff training records, ensuring staff meet skills maintenance timetables and recertification requirements.
  • Demonstrated experience in coordinating and delivering vocational education, training and development programs with the ability to apply these skills in a context relevant to a remote area, including a current minimum qualification in Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40116 latest version) or equivalent, or the ability and commitment to attain relevant accreditation within 12 months of accepting the position.
  • Well-developed verbal and interpersonal skills, including the ability to liaise with a broad variety of stakeholders, very well developed administrative, organizational and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience contributing as an effective team member, in coaching and mentoring other people in the workplace, and an innovative understanding of strategies that provide coaching and mentoring support to Indigenous peoples in a remote area.
  • The successful applicant will not be required to re-locate during this contract. The position will be located in ACT, Canberra and require work to be conducted via correspondence with the Manager.
  • The Training Officer will be required to:
    • Hold or have ability to obtain a working with children check.
    • Hold a current First Aid Certificate or have the ability to obtain this qualification.
    • Have a good computer literacy including being competent in MS Word and Excel .
    • Meet requirements of the Australian Public Service Code of Conduct.
