The Role

  • The primary purpose of this role is to provide technical rail infrastructure expertise and advice to the Rail Execution team in the execution of sustaining capital projects and ongoing operations of track works. The role provides technical input at all stages of rail execution works from studies and design to construction, post construction maintenance of railway infrastructure and for the timely and safe handover of completed works to standard back to operations.

    Qualifications:
  • Bachelor of Engineering Civil or Equivalent. Minimum 5 years of track work experience in a rail technical role
  • Current full West Australian "C" class motor vehicle license

    Skills:
  • Conducting rail infrastructure inspections for scoping design and constructions works, including QA inspections during and post construction.
  • Preparing and reviewing of technical documentation for design; i.e. design, geotechnical and survey scope of works, and basis of design in line with current and future business strategic direction
  • Guiding consultants (track, civil, survey, geotechnical) during study and design phases. This includes reviewing consultants' recommendations / designs and deciding the course of action. This includes approving designs and other design outputs.
  • Managing and responding to technical queries from consultants and contractors and engaging with Rail Engineering and other departments where their input is required.
  • Preparing and reviewing of technical documentation for construction; i.e. track, civil and drainage scope of works, construction methodologies and program, bill of materials, etc.
  • Resolving technical, commercial and safety issues onsite during Construction activities.
  • Technical input to design and construction interfaces involving various parties; BHP's Rail Execution, Track Maintenance, Rail Operations, Signaling, Rail Engineering, Analysis & Improvement, and external Design Consultants and Execution Contractors.
  • Carrying out material QA inspections involving turnout supply, ballast and sleepers, etc. Assisting with design improvement for turnouts in line with industry standards and Business requirements.
  • Reviewing scope of work from A&I department and identify and recommend project initiatives that lead to continuous improvement of costs, production and safety.
  • Representing the department on any technical matters with other departments or third parties that may be called upon.

    Experience:
  • Demonstrated experience delivering multi-disciplinary projects within Rail.
  • Strong experience in track renewals, methodologies and operations.
  • Experience in design (civil and track).
