Senior Transport Planner - Sydney CBD - Government

Primary purpose of the role
The primary objective of this role is to ensure that the clients' strategic plans, projects and goals align and support a range of State Agency and Local Government plans, directions, projects and activities. The position also ensures that the clients' strategic directions are informed by and in turn influence other government initiatives in areas, such as climate change and the environment, or service delivery. It provides high level strategic planning advice on issues relating to the external interfaces affecting transport plans and performance.

Key accountabilities

  • Provide strategic advice, recommendations and support documentation to management on transport planning options, proposals and reforms
  • Coordinate the clients' engagement with intergovernmental transport and planning groups to achieve alignment of goals with other state agencies and Local Government objectives
  • Analyse and evaluate transport planning options and develop solutions to address issues both within the transport industry and across interconnected activities.
  • Participate in committees and working groups and represent the client on external advisory committees as required
  • Coordinate, communicate and risk manage issues arising from State Agency or Local Government Partnerships


Key challenges

  • Delivering a credible, long term integrated master transport plan that reflects Government objectives and identifies key projects and strategies to meet transport and land use needs for the over the next 30 years.
  • Representing transport objectives and outcomes across the Branch, to ensure identification with and contribution to resolving Branch problems and sharing in Branch achievements.
  • Ensuring transport plans are informed by robust analysis and population growth modelling, transport demand, improved customer outcomes, value for money, employment patterns and other relevant variables.
  • Ensure the development of integrated strategies and solutions to achieve a safer, more reliable, efficient and sustainable rail system that meet customer needs.
  • Developing and managing key external stakeholder relationships and communications and negotiating agreed positions and solutions from conflicting and/or competing agendas.
  • Keeping abreast of current and emerging best practice, Government policy and statutory requirements.


Essential requirements
Tertiary qualification in a relevant discipline or equivalent experience.
