Our State Government client is seeking to engage a Senior Traffic Safety Engineer on a contract for 3 months.

About the Role:

As a senior engineer, this role requires a person who can inspire, energise and positively influence team and individual outcomes. The role is responsible for supervising, managing and motivating a team and providing appropriate support and guidance. Effective employee engagement skills are a key enabler in the performance of this role as is a values-based leadership style.

The ideal candidate will possess an innate ability to draw on the right skills in a contextually and environmentally appropriate manner, align team performance and develop capacity to achieve organisational objectives.   • Develop, implement, evaluate and manage ACT road safety strategies and traffic safety programs, including the Federal Black Spots program.
  • Undertake analysis and provide engineering and technical advice on traffic safety and other relevant transport matters.
  • Analyse ACT road crash data to identify key traffic safety issues affecting the ACT, produce data reports, and assist with the review and development of traffic safety data processes.
  • Respond to enquiries from the public, Minister's Office and media, and provide policy advice on traffic safety and related matters.
  • Negotiate and liaise with Government, industry, interest groups and the public and represent the department as required in local and national road safety forums.
  • Assist the Director, Traffic Safety Unit, with the day-to-day operations of the Unit, including leading and managing staff.
  • Provide leadership in the awareness of and ensure compliance with the principles of Occupational Health and Safety, Workplace Diversity and participative work practices.
  • Undertake other related duties as directed


The following capabilities form the criteria that are required to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position.

  • Demonstrated experience in developing and managing traffic safety and residential streets improvement engineering programs/initiatives.
  • Demonstrated technical ability to provide advice on traffic engineering projects including the management of consultancies.
  • Experience in team management, including proven skills in leading and motivating staff to deliver projects within challenging timeframes.
  • Demonstrated resource, time and project management skills and an understanding of relevant legislation and technical standards.
  • Demonstrated high level communication (oral and written), negotiation, liaison and representation skills and a demonstrated ability to consistently display high quality customer service principles.
  • A demonstrated commitment to implementing the principles of workplace diversity, participative work practices and occupational health and safety.

Professional / Technical Skills and Knowledge

  • A Civil Engineering University Degree
  • Membership of the Institute of Engineers Australia
  • Preferable, a post-graduate qualification in Traffic Engineering
