Our Federal Government client is seeking to engage a Senior Project Manager on a contract for 10 months with potential extension.

Position Overview

Specific duties for the Senior Project Manager include but not limited to:

  • working independently, setting own work plan to achieve delivery of objectives as part of end-to-end project management of a number of critical project/s
  • coordination of project, ensuring business area requirements are gathered and provided to the ICT project team ensuring they fully understand and deliver the specified requirements
  • point of contact between Service Delivery Operations Branch and ICT project team
  • provide updates on the Project at the various meetings as required
  • applying specialised knowledge (i.e. project management skills) to set standards for project delivery and provide guidance to the project team and stakeholders
  • prepare, perform and coordinate elicitation of requirements including brainstorming, workshops, prototyping, observation or interviews, and confirm or report on results.
  • planning and executing the transition of operational areas to the new arrangements based on business impact analysis and 'As Is - To Be' modelling.
  • project, pre-implementation and transformation analysis, as well as delivery.
  • collaborate with stakeholders (internal and external) to clearly define and clarify business needs to create an action plan, solution report or business case for consideration.
  • facilitate and lead communication across business units with a range of key stakeholders and represent the agency both internally and externally.
  • using expertise to interpret technical reports and requirements documents and, if required, convert technical language to business language for consumption by business stakeholders
  • actively engage and maintain strong stakeholder relationships with areas internal and external to the division to support the delivery of project and programme outcomes
  • assist in discussions to manage prioritisation for future releases
  • applying complex decision-making skills to undertake problem definition and issue analysis to present solutions and recommendations to ensure project delivery
  • contribute to, manage and report on allocated project work
  • represent EL1, Director, programme manager and/or work areas' interests in building relationships and negotiating positive outcomes with stakeholders across the Department, including technical representatives, visa processing officers and senior levels of the organisation
  • applying high level influencing, negotiating and persuasive skills to ensure desired project/programme/departmental objectives are delivered
  • provision of recommendations for sign off to Director, Assistant Secretary and in some cases First Assistant Secretary
  • undertaking project risk assessments and risk management activities
  • evaluate and report on project management methodology and recommending process improvements
  • identify project dependencies and monitor flow-on impacts
  • assist in building capability within the project team and IT delivery areas and eliminating single points of failure
  • ability to interpret high level technical language into business language/requirements.

Essential skills/experience/qualifications:

The successful candidate will have qualifications as a Senior IT Project Manager with at least 3 years experience in a Senior IT Project Management role.

Preferred education requirements for this role include formal qualifications in project management (PRINCE2 and/or agile certifications) and business analysis, as well as 5 years' practical application of project management skills working in medium to large work environments. Experience in working in government environments with an understanding of budget allocation or funding principles and risk management is also critical. Success in this role also relies on high quality communication and interpersonal relationship skills, tenacity and a strong leadership ability.

Desired skills/experience/qualifications:

As well as the above the successful candidate will have previously worked in a large government department and is able to use VISIO and Microsoft Suite of programs, including MS Project are essential.
