We seek an experienced Senior Project Engineer Tailings for an exciting opportunity with our client, to join a known brand in the mining sector based in Costerfield, Victoria

Reporting to the Sustainability Manager, the successful candidate will be responsible for the project management of Tailings Storage and Water Storage Facilities and the coordination of infrastructure projects relating to future water and tailings management.


Water Data Analysis and Management
  • Lead the end to end water infrastructure programs and projects to ensure key project deliverables and targets are met.
  • Review and analyse data, identify trends and make informed decisions regarding water storage, water balance and forecasts.
  • Direct water technician on operational requirements to achieve the water strategy based on water levels and trends.
  • Liaise with relevant maintenance/electrical personnel to ensure high availability of water related equipment/infrastructure.
  • Report weekly on water (water in and out) and tailings, identify and escalate red flags.
  • Identify improvements for cloud data collection systems.
  • Research and present opportunities for technology improvements.
Project Management
  • Manage the design through to execution of civil projects relating to water, tailings and future site projects.
  • Engage engineering consultants and ensure project specifications are fit for purpose.
  • Work with key stakeholders to achieve project deliverables.
  • Analyse budgets and identify improvement opportunities to ensure commercial and safety requirements are being met.
  • Schedule, inform and keep key stakeholders updated with progress on a regular basis.
  • Provide construction management assistance.
  • Review and streamline processes to ensure minimal delays.
Contractor Management
  • Mange contractor onboarding process to ensure all contractors have met Mandalay and regulatory site requirements.
  • Ensure that contractors have clear instruction relating to project deliverables as they related to project scopes, timelines and deliverables.
  • Manage day to day project deliverables and escalate any delays in a timely manner, provide recommendations on how to mitigate project delays.
  • Liaise with internal stakeholders regarding scheduled work.
  • Ensure contributions regarding recommended courses of action are included in budget areas of responsibility.
  • Prepare capital expenditures requests ensuring clarity of their link to the budget.
  • Develop and maintain a tailings strategy, that incorporates short- and long-term tailings requirements.
  • Ensure a harm minimisation approach through the application of effective governance and best engineering practices in the planning, design, construction, operation and closure of tailings facilities.
  • Consult relevant internal parties to ensure the strategy aligns with internal obligations and controls.
  • Ensure regular reviews of strategy to ensure currency and alignment with Plant and Mine activities.
  • Undertake/arrange regular audit/inspections/monitoring to ensure strategy alignment and tailings dam efficiency in line with ANCOLD requirements.
  • Research and present options for the alternative use of tailings and the rehabilitation of non-operational tailings facilities.

Key skills and experience
  • Tertiary qualification in Construction or Mining Engineering
  • 3+ years’ experience working in a similar role managing contractors on a mining site
  • Proven background/expertise regarding tailings (mandatory) 
  • Commitment to safe mining operation
  • Ability to work autonomously and in a team environment 
  • Outstanding communications and interpersonal skills
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Self-motivated, detail and quality focused
  • Full working rights in Australia (mandatory).
