Our Federal Government client is seeking to engage an APS6 Scientist on a contract for 12 months with potential extension.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Specific duties include:

  • Undertake laboratory and technical functions as per the obligations of the TGA as a WHO-essential regulatory laboratory (WHO-ERL) for influenza vaccines;
  • Perform batch release testing of influenza vaccines and conduct assay analysis and data entry checking;
  • Assist in the management of the order process associated with seasonal and pandemic influenza reagents;
  • Liaison with internal and external stakeholders regarding influenza strain selection, technical details of reagents, manufacturing processes and timeframes, invoicing and international shipping requirements;
  • Assist in the maintenance and improvement of the Quality Management System under which work is conducted and ensure that the Influenza Unit continues to fulfil the requirements of ISO17025 to maintain its NATA accreditation for the release testing of influenza vaccines;
  • Perform routine equipment calibration and maintenance activities;
  • Assist in assessing data submitted by manufacturers and sponsors in support of applications for batch release of vaccines and make recommendations to the decision maker
  • Supervise, train and mentor other staff as required;
  • Support the Flu Unit manger to coordinate and manage testing projects as required;
  • Work flexibly in a high-pressure environment to achieve team goals and broader organisational objectives by providing management support, undertaking other tasks and managing projects as required and directed; and
  • Cross train in other Units, such as Cell Culture and Batch Release Units.

Mandatory Requirement:

Candidates must be able to demonstrate:

  • Analytical capability in a relevant scientific discipline and experience in writing scientific reports;
  • The ability to work in the laboratory environment and to undertake routine testing, development of new methods and maintain and improve the systems underpinning that work;
  • An understanding of key scientific laboratory techniques that underpin testing of biological medicines or vaccines
  • Willingness to contribute ideas and support organisational goals;
  • The ability to work flexibly in a high-pressure environment while responding positively and flexibly to change;
  • Ability to communicate effectively within teams and work autonomously with drive and determination; and
  • Experience and sounds knowledge of IT systems and tools including SharePoint, office applications including Word and Excel.
  • Ability to obtain and/or maintain clearance at Baseline level


  • Graduate qualifications in a relevant scientific field and previous laboratory experience would be highly regarded;
  • Experience in a regulated laboratory environment; and
  • Experience working under a quality system that is accredited to ISO17025 or similar.
