Our client is seeking to engage a Safety Engineering and Assurance Specialist on a contract for 6 months with potential extension.

Position Overview

Our client provides products and services to the Royal Australian Navy and commercial maritime markets. Its core activities focus on the supply of naval sensors and in-service support which covers asset management, maintenance, and repair.

The Safety Engineering and Assurance Cell is the custodian of the system safety management system. It supports the unit in developing and delivering solutions (products, support equipment, systems, and services) that are adequately safe for their intended purpose to eliminate or reduce harm to people, equipment, and the environment.

Duties And Responsibilities:

  • The provision of professional system safety services, including:
    • Providing timely subject matter expert advice and engineering support.
    • Developing/improving training material and delivering training as required.
    • Facilitating on the job mentoring to personnel involved in system safety activities and decision making.
    • Assisting with the stewardship of the system safety management system by monitoring, identifying and/or implementing changes and improvements required to ensure ongoing best practice and compliance with safety legislation, industry regulation and corporate policies.
    • Participating and/or chairing System Safety Working Groups, Safety Review Boards and other Safety Committees and Workshops as appropriate.
    • Supporting the embedding of an enduring system safety capability and culture.
  • Fulfilling one or more of the following system safety roles (as per Chorus Safety Engineering Instruction) as required on bids, projects, and services:
    • Project Safety Manager (PSM) to plan and manage the required safety engineering activities and the delivery of associated artefacts as per the System Safety Program. This includes leading and/or supporting the determination of safety engineering effort during the bid phase to correctly estimate the size, complexity, and cost of the project System Safety Program.
    • Project Safety Engineer (PSE) to conduct the safety engineering activities and produce the required artefacts on time, budget, and quality. This includes:
    • Conducting a range of activities that address safety hazards and risks, Human Factors, and software safety.
    • Working with systems engineering teams to identify, derive and manage safety requirements, ensure that they are included in the solution design baseline and that their compliance is demonstrated through verification and validation.
    • Working with project engineering and design teams to develop effective mitigations and controls to hazards.
    • Safety Assurance Manager (SAM) to independently oversee, verify and validate the safety engineering activities and evidence for a solution. This involves conducting and/or supporting assurance activities including audits (internal and subcontractor) and gate reviews.

Our Ideal Candidate will have:

  • Australian Citizenship and ability to obtain NV1 Clearance. (No need to have one)
  • International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) clearance (Not mandatory)
  • Construction Industry White Card (Not mandatory)
  • Ability of International and/or national travel
  • Tertiary qualification or extensive experience in System Safety/Risk/Reliability/Systems Engineering or in a related discipline including, but not limited to Engineering, Computer Science, Human Factors.
  • Demonstrated relevant experience in a safety critical industry such a Defence, Railway, Aerospace, Nuclear or Oil & Gas.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively apply system safety techniques and tools and conduct hazard analyses and risk management activities - including the facilitation of workshops.
  • Proven track record of successfully managing and executing System Safety Programs that include system safety arguments, assessments, and artefacts.
  • Proven experience in conducting independent assurance activities including auditing.
  • Sound understanding of the Systems Engineering process.
  • Working knowledge of Safety Legislation, Industry Regulation and Technical Standards.
  • Advanced communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Excellent problem solving and a strong decision-making ability.
