Our client is seeking to engage a Safety Engineering and Assurance Manager on a contract for 6 months with potential extension.

Position Overview

Our client provides products and services to the Royal Australian Navy and commercial maritime markets. Its core activities focus on the supply of naval sensors and in-service support which covers asset management, maintenance, and repair.

The Safety Engineering and Assurance Cell is the custodian of the system safety management system. It supports the client in developing and delivering solutions (products, support equipment, systems, and services) that are adequately safe for their intended purpose to eliminate or reduce harm to people, equipment, and the environment.

Duties And Responsibilities:

  • Leadership and steering of the Safety Engineering and Assurance function, including
    • System safety organisation governance, roles, responsibilities, and program
    • System safety assurance and competences
    • System safety performance monitoring and continuous improvement
    • Embedding of an enduring system safety capability and culture
  • Lead and manage the provision of professional Safety Engineering and Assurance services, including
    • Assess, prioritise, and manage business needs and projects/customers' requests
    • Review and endorse subject matter expert advice and deliverables.
    • Provide ongoing guidance, mentoring, upskilling, and training to personnel involved in system safety activities and decision making at all levels
    • Execute, monitor, and report on the system safety assurance program including the management of escalated safety risks and endorsement of Safety Cases.
  • Lead, manage and develop a high-performing team of Safety Engineering and Assurance Specialists, including
    • Day-to-day operational management of the team performance including human resources, systems, processes, and finances
    • Work allocation and management of workload and project commitments
    • Oversight and mentoring of team members and dedicated staff working on specific projects as required
    • Select and manage contingent labour and contracted professional services
  • Stewardship of the system safety management system by monitoring, identifying and/or implementing changes and improvements required to ensure ongoing best practice and compliance with safety legislation, industry regulation and corporate policies.
  • Ensure the correct understanding, communication and the demonstrated compliance with Defence Seaworthiness and Safety in Design principles and requirements.
  • Oversee and support, or sometimes fulfil the following system safety roles as required on bids, projects, and in-service support:
    • Safety Assurance Manager (SAM) to independently oversee, verify and validate the safety engineering activities and evidence for a solution. This involves conducting and/or supporting assurance activities including audits (internal and subcontractor) and gate reviews as well as chairing System Safety Review Boards and Steering Committees.
    • Project Safety Manager (PSM) to plan and manage the required safety engineering activities and the delivery of associated artefacts as per the System Safety Program. This includes leading and/or supporting the determination of safety engineering effort during the bid phase to correctly estimate the size, complexity, and cost of the project System Safety Program.
    • Project Safety Engineer (PSE) to conduct the safety engineering activities and produce the required artefacts on time, budget, and quality. This includes:
      • Conducting a range of activities that address safety hazards and risks, Human Factors, and software safety.
      • Working with systems engineering teams to identify, derive and manage safety requirements, ensure that they are included in the solution design baseline and that their compliance is demonstrated through verification and validation.
      • Working with project engineering and design teams to develop effective mitigations and controls to hazards.

Our Ideal Candidate will have:

  • Australian Citizenship and ability to obtain NV1 Clearance. (No need to have one)
  • International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) clearance
  • Construction Industry White Card
  • Ability of International and/or national travel
  • Tertiary qualification or extensive experience in System Safety/Risk/Reliability/Systems Engineering or in a related discipline including, but not limited to Engineering, Computer Science, Human Factors.
  • Relevant experience in safety and mission critical programs within heavily regulated industries (Defence, Railway, Aerospace, Nuclear or Oil & Gas).
  • Proven experience with the stewardship of safety managements systems, the execution of system safety assurance programs and the management of safety risks.
  • Working knowledge of Safety Legislation, Industry Regulation and Technical Standards combined with a sound understanding of the Systems Engineering process.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and manage a high-performing team with a focus on service delivery and customer satisfaction.
  • Advanced communication and interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to engage, influence and negotiate with diverse internal and external stakeholders and customers.
  • Excellent problem solving and a strong decision-making ability.
