The Principal Corporate & Government Affairs Advisor is responsible for: preparing and implementing a broad range of strategic communications and stakeholder engagement plans; ensuring effective media relations; providing reputational and issues management advice; coordinating government relations; and overseeing internal and online communication.

Integrated Management Systems:

  • All statutory requirements are met and standards are achieved.
  • Develop and oversee the systems that ensure the organisation complies with all applicable codes, as well as its legal and statutory requirements.
  • Comply with and demonstrate a positive commitment to organisational processes and ISO Management Systems including Quality, Environment, Safety and Information Security.
    Strategic Communications and Issues Management:
  • Develop and implement the organisation's Stakeholder Engagement and Communications Strategy.
  • Develop, execute and manage communications and stakeholder engagement plans for major projects and activities, including oversight of all content.
  • Respond to and advise on reputational issues and maintain a positive image of the organisation through effective media relations and issues management.
  • Prepare Issues Briefs for major issues in a timely manner as they arise.
  • Coordinate market research projects, including the annual the organisation Stakeholder Satisfaction Survey.
  • Oversight of the organisation online communications.

Media Relations

  • Deliver the organisation's annual Media Relations Plan (including Social Media strategy).
  • Build and maintain effective media relationships and operate as a key contact for the media.
  • Respond to and advise on reputational issues and maintain a positive image of the organisation.
  • Prepare communications and marketing material (media statements, fact sheets), including Ministerial media releases.
  • Provide timely advice to the organisation's leadership of relevant media reports and public policy issues
  • (announcements by government and key stakeholders).
  • Monitor developments and announcements by relevant stakeholders / sectors and provide advice to the business.

Government Relations:

  • Deliver the organisation's annual Government Relations Plan.
  • Build and maintain relationships with key government stakeholders to ensure an open and productive lines of communication.
  • Maintain an understanding of government processes and procedures.
  • Keep abreast of the political, legislative and social environment to provide advice and recommendations on government and media issues to the organisation leadership.
  • Prepare briefing notes, answer Parliamentary Questions and respond to government requests for information as required.

  • Assist in the development and management of the annual operating budgets for Corporate & Government Affairs.
  • Provide direct supervision for the Communications Officer and provide guidance across the Corporate & Government Affairs team.

Other Duties

  • Assist Director Corporate & Government Affairs with Executive Committee and Board reporting and papers as required.
  • Crisis management support as requested by the Director of Corporate & Government Affairs.
  • Other duties and projects as requested by the Director of Corporate & Government Affairs.
  • Tertiary qualifications in communications, public relations, marketing, journalism or equivalent.

Work-related Requirements:

  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate strategic communications plans and activities across a diverse organisation and the provision of strategic communication and stakeholder management advice to Executive members and senior managers.
  • High-level experience in media relations, issues management and in managing organisational reputation.
  • High-level experience in government relations and Ministerial liaison, including the ability to establish and maintain appropriate networks.
  • High-level interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to liaise with and build effective relationships with key stakeholders both internally and externally.
  • Strong research skills, with the ability to analyse and conceptualise broader issues and contribute to the development of communication strategies
  • Highly developed organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities.

The ability to work outside of usual business hours, sound computing skills, as well as the ability to gain a Maritime Security Identification Card, and WA Driver's Licence are prerequisites for positions with the organisation.
