Our client is a globally diversified mining and metals company. They produce bauxite, alumina, aluminum, energy and metallurgical coal, manganese, nickel, silver, lead and zinc at their operations in Australia, Southern Africa and South America.

GEMCO is one of the world's largest manganese mining and concentrating operations located on Groote Eylandt in the Northern Territory, accounting for over 20% of the worlds' manganese ore production. GEMCO controls and operates all aspects of mining, processing, logistics and shipping on Groote Eylandt.

About the role

We are are seeking a motivated candidate for a Mine Design Engineer to be based at GEMCO. Reporting to the Senior Engineer Mine Design the purpose of this role is to provide input into the mine design and use sound engineering judgement and experience to develop a detailed production plan that provides clear instructions for Production Mining stakeholders to ensure production targets are met within HSECQ requirements.

You will look to provide well-defined and executed planning and scheduling processes that deliver monthly budgeted quantities and annual rehabilitation commitments.

  • Works safely within the South 32 Care Strategy including establishing and maintaining an interdependent safety culture within the team including the delivery of improvements in safety performance
  • Engage relevant stakeholders and seek their buy-in to deliver weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual mine designs to maximise business performance
  • Develop detailed engineered mine designs that includes clear instructions to deliver the production plan for bulk dozer push operations, prestrip operations, drill and blast operations, water management operations, drill and blast operations, topsoil relocation operations, rehabilitation ripping and seeding operations
  • Develop mine designs and stage plans that maintain predictable, stable levels of production performance for Production Mining, Processing and Logistics activities
  • Provide and communicate with survey the mine design excavation strings and parameters to install survey controls (pegs and markers)
  • Provide mine design information, guidance and support to Production Mining personnel
  • Conduct mine design reconciliations and investigations
  • Report poor ground conditions / geological disturbances
  • Identifying and implementing safety, volume and cost improvement initiatives
  • Provide weekly depletion volumes and inputs to the Engineer Mine Scheduling

    GEMCO is a one hour flight from Darwin and a one hour 20 minute flight from Cairns. GEMCO's facilities include an indoor gym, beachside workout area, swimming pool, golf course, tennis and squash courts, sports oval and scenic walking track.

    About you
  • Degree in Mining Engineering (AusIMM qualification highly regarded)
  • Proven experience within a similar role within the mining industry including a solid knowledge and understanding of Mine planning principles
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of relevant current Occupational Health, Safety and Environmental legislation
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of Exploration Geology
  • Proficiency in software such as Vulcan, Deswik, Arcgis, Xpac and Xact will be highly regarded
