Our Federal Government client is seeking to engage a Law Interpretation Specialist on a contract for 12 months.

About the Role:

Our Client is seeking law professionals to join an elite team of tax law specialists in Policy, Analysis and Legislation (PAL) areas.

  • As a Law Interpretation Specialist, you'll lead and co-ordinate technically complex or sensitive law interpretation work programs or projects that have strategic and operational significance.
  • You will have an extensive understanding of the application of tax and superannuation laws and policies in the commercial and community context. Applying your expertise, you'll research, analyse and provide expert advice on the highest risk and most important issues to executives and external stakeholders, including partners such as Treasury. On some matters, you will have responsibility for setting the department's view on how certain tax and superannuation laws apply.
  • As a Law Interpretation Specialist in PAL, you'll lead the development or analysis of policy proposals for changes to legislation, policies and practices using an integrated tax design approach. You will champion the simplification of the tax and superannuation laws, to deliver an improved and streamlined client experience.
  • You'll need to be future-focused and able to analyse the broader impacts of tax law and policy change. You will develop and manage relationships within the department and across the APS to provide feedback on draft policies and laws, and develop recommendations to achieve a consistent agency position. You may also work with Treasury and other government agencies and forums to help shape tax and superannuation policy and law, and implement the Government's legislative agenda to ensure it can be interpreted and administered to give effect to its policy intent.
  • You'll take well-informed risks to make timely decisions, setting the strategic direction and leading small teams of junior tax specialists.

Our Ideal Candidate:

  • has exemplary law interpretation skills with expert knowledge of tax and superannuation laws and policies
  • is able to lead and provide technical expertise to ensure policy and draft law is developed through a process of integrated tax design
  • has proven ability to manage and resolve complex tax technical issues with practical solutions using sound judgment
  • is able to lead, manage and develop small teams of junior tax specialists
  • provides strategic direction, with an extensive understanding of the broader impacts of legislative/policy changes on the department, other government agencies and the community
  • communicates with influence and is collaborative, having the ability to work with stakeholders on highly sensitive and contested tax issues.

  • Attractive superannuation contributions of 15.4%
  • Award-winning and highly professional organisation
  • Contemporary workspaces and technology
  • Learning and development opportunities
