Our Federal Government client is seeking to engage a Horticultural Field Officer to start ASAP

Position Overview

The role's primary objectives are:

  • Individually and as part of a team, enhance the presentation and care for the health of the National Arboretum Canberra's living collection by undertaking best-practice horticultural maintenance and techniques.
  • Provide a visible presence on site and interact with visitors to present a professional and welcoming image to the public in line with ACTPS values and code of conduct.
  • Conduct regular inspections within areas of responsibility and report on maintenance requirements using electronic asset management systems.
  • Operate and maintain machinery (small plant, spray equipment, chainsaws etc.).
  • Supervise apprentices and volunteer activities.
  • Ensure a high standard of safety within all work practices.
  • Ensure cleanliness of depot facilities and equipment including storage areas and plant machinery.
  • Undertake other duties as required.


  • Practical experience and/or qualifications in horticulture, arboriculture and irrigation maintenance.
  • Ability to operate horticultural equipment, associated plant machinery, irrigation systems and deliver routine maintenance.
  • Proven capacity to work as part of a team by establishing shared outcomes, progressive task assessment and acknowledging valuable contributions from others.
  • Demonstrated self-awareness, professionalism, and a proven commitment to the ongoing development of positive workplace culture including the integration of workplace health and safety, and principles of respect, equity, and diversity.



  • Certificate III or equivalent in horticulture/arboriculture
  • Truck and/or plant operator's licenses
  • Chainsaw operator's qualifications
  • Side by side ATV operator's qualifications
  • WH&S Construction Industry Induction White Card
  • Chemical usage qualifications (Chemcert) relevant to the position description


  • Current driver's licence
  • First Aid Certificate or a willingness to undertake training
