We are currently looking for a Head of Media & Public Affairs to join a world-renowned humanitarian not-for-profit organisation (NFP) located in Sydney.

The Head of Media & Public Affairs reports into the Chief Development Officer and manages a team of three highly motivated media and public relations professionals.

This is a hands-on role, as well as co-creating media strategy and leading the media and public affairs team there is a requirement to play an active role in the implementation of the organisation's media management. The role works in a collaborative and integrated way with brand, digital, fundraising, programs and government relations and is responsible for:

  • The continual development and implementation of a comprehensive media and public relations strategy supporting brand strategy and growing the organisation's reputation in Australia.
  • Production and distribution of best-practice content for news media including written and visual material.
  • Creating and responding to media and public relations opportunities that advance the NFP's campaigns and priority issues.
  • Working collaboratively across teams, to support the ongoing development and implementation of a content strategy and narrative of the NFP's work.

  • Tertiary qualifications in Communications (or related field) or adequate professional experience.
  • Must reside in Sydney. Work from home is available but not on a full-time basis.
  • Proven experience of effectively developing and delivering successful media and public affairs strategy in a commercial consumer-focused industry.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the Australian broadcast and digital news and media landscape with extensive contacts across a broad range of publishers and outlets.
  • Proven experience in reputational management including in crisis and emergency situations.
  • Understanding of, or interest in, international development issues, world affairs, current events.
  • Experience in providing strategic advice to executives on internal and external communication issues.
  • Advanced writing, editing and verbal communication skills with the ability to write for multiple platforms and audiences.
  • Proven leadership and people-management skills, with the capacity to develop and strengthen the skills of direct report/s.
  • Willingness to work outside normal office hours and be on call to respond to requests from national media and international colleagues.
  • A commitment to the work and values of the NFP.
