Our Federal Government client is seeking to engage an APS6 Finance Officer on a contract for 12 Months, with potential extension.

Position Overview

The APS6 Senior Finance Officer (Professional Stream) is accountable under limited direction to undertake complex finance related work that is guided by legislation, policies, procedures, standards, methodologies and precedents. The position will perform various activities within one or more of the core finance functions of the Finance and Corporate Service Division, that may include, financial accounting, management accounting, finance business partnering, financial analytics and scheme finance.

The APS6 Senior Finance Officer (Professional Stream) will coordinate and assume responsibility to provide detailed advice and operational support in relation to complex finance issues and problems. The APS6 Senior Finance Officer (Professional Stream) will have a considerable level of internal stakeholder contact in relation to complex, difficult or sensitive finance issues. It will be required to liaise with a range of internal and external stakeholders in a representational role on behalf of the branch and the division.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Accountable to provide accurate operational and financial advice and support across a range of activities within one or more of the core finance functions including:
    • developing plans and objectives for short-term finance projects;
    • setting priorities and ensuring quality outputs for their own work and the work area;
    • monitoring emerging financial issues and identifying likely risks and impacts; and
    • developing recommendations and solutions to mitigate, correct and prevent reoccurrence of financial risks.
  • Coordinate and support others working on specific finance projects or work programs; facilitating and encouraging effective performance against specific objectives and outcomes; providing in-depth advice for specialist finance activities.
  • Work within a core finance function, interpret and apply legislation, policies, procedures, standards, methodologies and precedents to their work activities; anticipating problems and contributing to issues management; escalating very complex financial issues to a team leadership position within the Division.
  • Apply knowledge of the accounting standards, and other relevant technical requirements, in ensuring finance activities undertaken are consistent with the requirements for the relevant core finance function, particularly for the Financial Accounting function where such technical requirements are the primary area of focus.
  • Consolidate, assess and evaluate available information on complex or escalated finance issues that have a medium to high impact on a core finance function; make decision to select and recommend an appropriate course of action.
  • Identify complex finance related problems or issues, use established or innovative methods to resolve or mitigate.
  • Manage relationships with stakeholders, consult, advise, anticipate and respond to their needs and expectations to achieve outcomes and facilitate cooperation in the context of complex or sensitive finance issues.
  • Communicate and negotiate to maximise cooperation in a wide range of complex and sensitive financial issues, requiring persuasion and sensitivity.

Mandatory Requirements:

  • Tertiary level qualifications in Accounting or equivalent academic specialisation meeting the academic entry requirements of the Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CA), Certified Practising Accountants (CPA) Australia and/or Institute of Public Accountants (IPA) professional development programs.
