About the Branch
The Strategic Policy and Partnerships Branch develops and implements key policies and strategies, undertakes tactical communications, and delivers targeted education and engagement to support the Great Barrier Reef’s resilience. The Branch is responsible for the Authority’s strategic governance arrangements through the Marine Park Authority (MPA) Board and develops strong internal and external partnerships to deliver outcomes that support the Authority’s corporate priorities.
About the role:
The Chief Scientist forms part of the extended leadership team and provides independent, expert, scientific advice to government, stakeholders, policy advisers and the community on key threats to the Reef and strategic priorities that support its management. The Chief Scientist works with the scientific community, researchers, government and industry to provide this advice.
The Chief Scientist provides high quality, science-based strategic direction, advice, leadership and innovation across the Authority’s plans, policies and programs. The role also leads Reef resilience activities through partnerships, collaboration and education and will be required to represent the Authority at key forums and media engagements.
In this role you will have a real opportunity to contribute to the important work of the Reef Authority to protect and preserve this natural icon now and into the future. The Chief Scientist is a trusted and respected advisor and plays an integral role in communicating with and educating reef visitors, the Australian and International Community and other key stakeholders about the Reef, its health and the work of the Reef Authority.

About You:
- A qualification in a relevant science or natural management discipline
- Ability to undertake objective, systematic analysis and draw accurate conclusions based on evidence, while recognising links between connected issues
- Demonstrated experience as an influential leader
- Experienced In high-level stakeholder engagement and the ability to communicate clearly with a variety of audiences on a diverse range of subjects
- Experienced scientist who is passionate and understands the Reef, ocean and its connection to the land and Sea Country
- Ability to identify problems and opportunities and work collaboratively to deliver results and solutions
- Enjoys networking and has a commitment to continual learning
- Able to travel when required
- Direct involvement and contribution to the protection, sustainable use, understanding and enjoyment of the Great Barrier Reef
