Our Federal Government client is seeking to engage a Case Management Officer on a contract for 12 months with potential extension.

About the Role

The Case Management works under guidance to manage, progress, and resolve AAT applications. The role will assess available information against legislative criteria and department policy to determine the most suitable way to conduct AAT proceedings on behalf of the department. The focus is on resolving matters in a timely manner and, where reasonably possible, without a need to progress to an AAT hearing.

For applications where it is not possible to resolve a matter early, the role is responsible for preparing a matter for and attending Case Conferences, Conciliation Conferences and Hearings including providing timely and clear instructions to internal or external lawyers and representing the department's position in the proceedings.

The Case Management works independently and as part of a team, including working collaboratively with legal and technical experts and other colleagues to progress their matters. The role will identify gaps in evidence and often obtain further information and/or expert evidence necessary to progress AAT applications and identify innovative solutions and outcomes.

The role is accountable for effectively organising and managing a high volume of cases covering a diverse range of complex issues. It will exercise sound judgement, high level independence and problem-solving skills to achieve early resolution through negotiation or progress to a final hearing. The Case Management will engage directly with AAT applicants and their representatives, utilising interpersonal, liaison and negotiation skills, and strong awareness of issues affecting people with disability.

Responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

  • Undertaking end to end case management activities, subject to appropriate line manager input and oversight.
  • Undertaking case management of complex AAT matters and analysing to develop options for early resolution.
  • Obtaining necessary information and advice to effectively resolve AAT matters.
  • Applying alternate dispute resolution methods and advocacy skills to resolving applications/reviews, in keeping with the model litigant principles.
  • Attending Case Conferences, Conciliations and Hearings conducted by the AAT.
  • Preparing documents detailing resolution options and outcomes at Case Management meetings.
  • Assessing and responding to priorities and risks, including risk to the participant, Scheme sustainability and the department.
  • Preparing and maintaining electronic record keeping, including evidence supporting decision-making processes and justifying conclusions reached during the case management process.
