Our Federal Government client is seeking to engage a Assistant Director - Communications and Engagement on a contract for 6 months with potential extension.

Position Overview

The Strategic Water Policy and Engagement Branch is responsible for providing departmental policy advice and implementation expertise concerning a range of cross-cutting policy and program areas including international, national, and Murray-Darling Basin.

The Engagement and Culture Section is responsible for providing strategy and support to the Water Division on engagement, events, communication and media planning and delivery and website materials. The team is also responsible for ensuring a strong collaborative culture in the division. We work to support the Minister's Office on proactive and reactive media, we work with our colleagues across the Commonwealth to communicate and promote our policies and programs and to ensure we are transparent with and accountable to communities - and we work to make sure community issues and ideas are heard and responded to.

The EL1 position may be responsible for internal and external event planning and execution. The role could involve brand management, liaison with internal clients and external providers, event management, activity scheduling, procurement and some writing and publishing. All team members support one another and may be tasked to work on other priorities as they arise.

All team members must work with the central Communication and Media Branch to ensure central services are aware, engaged, and utilised where appropriate.

Main Duties

Assistant Directors have direct supervisory responsibilities for APS level staff and are expected to build strong relationships with staff in the Division, with communication and engagement professionals across the Commonwealth water family and with delivery partners. Assistant Directors may be asked to supervise staff and manage relationships with partners and stakeholders across a dispersed geographic region.

Duties for the role may include:

  • Provide strategic advice and support to the Division on internal and external engagement, culture and/or communication and media.
  • Develop and implement sponsorships strategies to increase recognition of the value of water to the general community.
  • Develop and implement engagement strategies to uplift internal capability.
  • Manage the delivery of engagement and/or communications services for the Division.
  • Demonstrate leadership through contributing to the strategic direction of the Division and the Division's culture.
  • Develop messages and materials that are tailored and relevant to the audience.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of communication and/or engagement strategies to ensure continual improvement.
  • Manage the procurement, selection and delivery of consultant work.
  • Provide direct supervision for APS level communication staff, fulfilling related HR, financial and reporting obligations.

Knowledge and experience:

  • Manage and lead team outcomes, monitor progress and follow through to deliver quality outcomes
  • Ability to build commitment to shared goals though leadership and coaching
  • Commit to understanding the policy and program context and content and the department's responsibilities to ensure alignment of team activities
  • Commit to meeting the department's legislative, financial and administrative frameworks, government decision-making processes and agency guidelines and regulations.
  • Promote and manage complex relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders
  • High level written and oral communication skills including an ability to synthesise and tailor diverse messages and information in plain English and for media use
  • Manage multiple projects with the ability to deliver on projects within timeframes
  • Some travel and out of hours work may be expected

Desirable for the role:

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in marketing, communications, stakeholder engagement, journalism or related field would be an advantage.
  • Some knowledge of water policy and programs is highly regarded
