Our Federal Government client is seeking to engage a APS6 Scientific Writer on a contract for 12 months with potential extension.

About the Role:

Branch: The Prescription Medicines Authorisation Branch (PMAB) sits within the Medicines Regulation Division (MRD) and is responsible for evaluating new chemical entity prescription medicines, leading to an approval or rejection decision. Through evaluating the clinical aspects of clinical medicines, PMAB ensures medicines available for supply in Australia are safe, fit for their intended purpose and available in a timely manner. The branch also approves clinical aspects of variations to registered medicines and participates in a number of transparency initiatives.

Section: The Business Systems Review and Reporting section (BSRR) provides a range of services that support the registration of medicines in Australia. The section provides key services to PMAB including supporting the application of technology, data analytics and reporting, business intelligence, producing transparency-related documents, and coordinating services for external advice and the Advisory Committee on Medicines (ACM). The BSRR will also have a key role in project work within PMAB.

The APS 6 Content Specialist will assist with: preparing technical documents for publication; secretariat support; scientific meeting minutes; updating regulatory guidelines; preparing materials to operationalise new or update existing policies or schemes; and liaising with both internal and external stakeholders.

Duties of position

Specific duties include:

  • Preparation of scientific and regulatory information for online publication, including the Australian Public Assessment Report (AusPAR)
  • Secretariat support for expert advisory committee meetings, including drafting agenda papers, compiling supporting documents and writing minutes.
  • Assist in the preparation of a variety of written materials, including: Ministerial correspondence; committee papers; PowerPoint presentations; policy, guidance and other technical documents.
  • Review PMAB related information on website to ensure it is current and draft material for publication.
  • Resolve moderately complex enquiries from stakeholders and provide information and advice as a representative of PMAB

Mandatory requirements

Candidates must be able to demonstrate:

  • Highly developed written skills, including drafting, editing and the ability to understand and distil complex information.
  • High level verbal communication skills with ability to liaise effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders.
  • Ability to prioritise tasks, respond positively and flexibly to change and produce quality outputs to tight deadlines.


  • A degree in biological science or a related field such as pharmacy, chemistry, biochemistry or toxicology from an Australian tertiary institution or comparable overseas qualification

Eligibility Requirements

  • A National Police Certificate (obtained within the last 6 months) will be required for the successful candidate.
  • Australian Citizenship is essential
