CHANDLER MACLEOD AND THE AUSTRALIAN EMPLOYMENT COVENANT

Chandler Macleod is a proud supporter of the Australian Employment Covenant (AEC) – a combined initiative of the Australian Government, Australian employers and the Indigenous community, aimed at securing 50,000 jobs for Indigenous Australians.
As a result of this initiative the AEC has brought much needed focus and attention to creating and providing sustainable employment opportunities for Indigenous Australians. Our support of this initiative includes working in collaboration with our clients, the Indigenous community and other stakeholders to provide a holistic solution to the attraction, recruitment and retention of Indigenous Australians.
As a measure of our commitment to this initiative, and to the AEC’s practical model of sustainable Indigenous employment, the AEC is co-located in a number of Chandler Macleod offices nationally.
OUR INDIGENOUS EMPLOYMENT SERVICE
Chandler Macleod has appointed a number of Indigenous Liaison Consultants whose primary focus is to assist our clients in increasing the participation of Indigenous Australians in the workforce.
Examples of the work that our specialists deliver include;
- Developing culturally sensitive strategies for clients throughout the sourcing, recruitment and retention process
- Working closely with local Indigenous communities to engage candidates and match them to client job vacancies
- Engaging with Job Services Australia providers to source work-ready candidates
- Bespoke advertising campaigns to target and attract Indigenous Australians
- Partnering with Indigenous Employment Providers to deliver work readiness programs for those requiring pre-employment support and training
- Delivering cultural awareness training to clients
- Partnering with select organisations to provide mentoring and retention support.
OUR EXPERTISE IN ASSESSMENT IS KEY
Chandler Macleod utilises a set of assessment tools and ‘BestFit’ recruitment methodologies, designed to determine a candidate’s suitability for a role. It is being widely used in Indigenous recruitment to effectively screen candidates ‘in’, resulting in a 66% increase in the success of candidate placement. The tools present a clear view of a candidate’s potential, and this information can be further used to facilitate the on-boarding process, in addition to aiding candidate retention.
WORKING WITH OUR PARTNERS
At Chandler Macleod, we acknowledge that the success of any Indigenous Engagement & Employment program is dependent on being able to effectively engage both local Indigenous communities and a variety of other organisations nationally. To this end, we have secured relationships with the following;
- Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR)
- Aboriginal Employment Covenant (AEC)
- Job Services Australia providers (JSAs)
- Indigenous Employment Providers (IEPs).
Working with these organisations, we are able to offer the breadth of Indigenous services that our clients are now seeking. Furthermore, in collaboration with our partners, we are proud to be supporting the achievement of sustainable employment outcomes for Indigenous Australians.
SOME OF OUR SUCCESSES IN INDIGENOUS EMPLOYMENT
On behalf of a large nickel-producing company, we have extensively supported this client’s Indigenous Participation Program. This has included the delivery of work readiness training for new hires and assistance with the design and delivery of cultural awareness training for client stakeholders. Our Mining & Resources team also provided recruitment and payroll services for 8 new Indigenous trainees.
Chandler Macleod has managed a large federal government departments’ Indigenous recruitment strategy. This has included the coordination of internal and external programs, sponsoring activities in the community, running a mentoring program, and a youth connection program that included a course to prepare Indigenous young people for working in the department.
Working in partnership with one of our clients in the logistics support sector in WA, our local Indigenous Liaison Consultant continues to work closely with our client’s Indigenous Development Manager to promote employment opportunities to both Indigenous groups and Job Service Australia providers. This encompasses joint presentations, consultation visits with local communities, and training for Indigenous prisoners at a local prison to prepare them for entering the workforce when they are released. In a six month period we have successfully placed 12 Indigenous candidates in a variety of roles for this client.
Chandler Macleod partnered with a government department client to assist a local Indigenous community in becoming self sufficient and to provide support to those in need. A local contact centre was established as part of the client’s expansion to their Northern Territory contact centre. We supported this client in recruiting and placing 60 Indigenous Australians out of a total of 66 overall hires for the contact centre.
